Catdoku

Catdoku transforms the familiar rules of Sudoku and Minesweeper into an engaging cat-placement puzzle. Instead of filling in numbers, you must find the correct position for each cat so that the entire grid meets all the requirements.

How To Play

Getting To Know The Board

Each level features a grid of colored squares. Your task is to identify the correct cells to place a specific number of cats. For instance, on a 6×6 board, the final solution includes only six cats, leaving the remaining cells empty.

Four Simultaneous Rules Determine The Correct Placement

A cat is correctly placed only when the entire layout satisfies four conditions: no two cats share the same row or column, each color appears only once, and no two cats touch (including diagonally). Therefore, every placement requires considering the impact on the remaining positions.

Marking Suspect Cells To Narrow Down Options

You can click a cell to mark it with an "X" before making a final decision. Once you identify the correct spot, double-click the cell to place a cat. This marking method helps eliminate invalid positions and clarifies the path to the solution.

Catdoku Tips

  • Check the rows and columns before considering a cell's color.
  • Once a cat is placed, immediately rule out the cells adjacent to it in all eight directions.
  • Use the "X" mark to keep track of positions where a cat cannot be placed.
  • Don't just consider each cat in isolation; a single choice can affect multiple other positions on the board. For larger grids, tackle specific areas based on confirmed placements before making further deductions.

FAQs

How does Catdoku differ from standard Sudoku?

Catdoku does not require filling cells with numbers. Instead, you must determine the positions of cats based on rows, columns, colors, and the spacing between them.

Why can't two cats be placed diagonally adjacent to each other?

Catdoku rules go beyond just checking rows and columns. Cats cannot touch diagonally either, so you must consider all the cells surrounding a cat.
